Cashier Handbook Redesign
I was contracted to redesign the user interface and graphics of the cashier handbook at one of Central Market’s Dallas locations. This product is used by 50+ people in the service department. My design increased scanning speed and customer throughput by 50% and dramatically improved the customer experience at the register.

The Research
Based on surveys and data I collected, poor structure, inconsistent formatting, and a lack of visual aids were the biggest issues cashiers had with the existing book. I removed anything that was not needed or out-of-date, including meats, seafood, and floral, among other sections.
I audited over 1,200 items 3 times and reduced the amount of pages from 41 to 26, a reduction of the book by over 36%.
Prototype Testing
The main focus with the visual interface graphics was clarity. Several versions were prototyped and tested in-store over a month to arrive at the final layout. I chose the Arial font for its universal readability and used the Central Market style guide to create a color coded search system to guide cashiers through the book efficiently.
The Implementation
For final rollout, I selected the sturdiest binders, pages, and cardstock within budget to create the most durable book possible. The end product is a clean, easy to use, handbook that has increased scanning speed and reduced product loss.
My project won the innovation award and became the template for other Central Market locations to start building new handbooks from.
